Do you find that when you're grinding coffee into your portafilter that you end up having to clean up a messy pile of coffee grounds on your counter top?
With my particular work flow I find that the problem is even worse as I like to distribute the coffee grounds in the filter basket with a mini whisk which produces more consistent extractions. Using the whisk can result in more coffee falling out of the filter basket.
The solution??? A dosing funnel... but not just any dosing funnel. My strong preference is a funnel which is engineered in such a way that one can tamp through the funnel. This is referred to as a tamp through funnel (strange that!).
My work flow:
1. Place funnel on portafilter and position under the grinder spout
2. Grind coffee into portafilter
3. Distribute coffee grounds using mini whisk
4. Lightly tamp through the funnel
5. Remove funnel and then proceed with full pressure tamp
6. Put portafilter in machine and extract coffee
My tamp through funnel comes from a wonderful manufacturer in Germany, Tidaka Espresso Tools. I do not have any relationship with that company other than that I love their products.
