Points of failure...

Points of failure...

I take my ability to use electricity for granted...

I was roasting on the weekend when suddenly the roaster completely shut off half-way through my final batch.  The problem... a failed Residual Current Device (RCD).

What is an RCD?  I'll quote Horizon Power:
"A Residual Current Device is a sensitive safety device that switches off the electricity within 10 to 50 milliseconds if there is an electrical fault. An RCD is is designed to protect against the risks of electrocution and fire caused by earth faults."

RCDs are great, they protect you from death by electrocution.  But when they fail they stop electricity powering your equipment.

Fortunately my heroic electrician was able to quickly sort this situation out.  I include an image of the failed component.

When I roast later this afternoon I'll take all of the components in the roaster's electrical system slightly less for granted!
