More detail from "M", the coffee beer brewer...
Last week's newsletter focused on a beer brewed with Garage Roasters' coffee. M was kind enough to write a short piece describing his wonderful coffee beer:
It is called ‘White with One’ dark ale. A beer in the style of a British ale, incorporating amber malt and chocolate malts. It also includes an addition of lactose, a milk sugar that is unfermentable to yeast, which adds body/mouthfeel and sweetness to the finished beer.
100g (5g/litre) of Croydon Blend whole coffees beans were added at the end of fermentation and allowed to steep in the beer for several days before bottling.
The finished beer is characterised by an ‘espresso’ brown colouration, aromas of coffee and milk chocolate, and flavours of coffee, toffee and chocolate. The amber malts impart sweetness, balanced against an elevated bitterness, and the lactose gives the beer a rounded mouthfeel. 5.4% ABV.
