Coffee and dementia... a must read...

I am so sorry for the clickbaity post title... it's really not my writing style... however you really do need to read this...

In February of 2025, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), one of the most prestigious and widely cited peer-reviewed medical journals in the world, published an investigation titled "Coffee and Tea Intake, Dementia Risk, and Cognitive Function".

The key finding from that investigation is that consumption caffeinated coffee is associated with lower dementia risk and this finding is highly statistically significant.  I know that many reading this newsletter will have much stronger statistics backgrounds than your humble blog poster so please do forgive any errors in interpretation!

The study is large, 131 821 individuals from 2 cohorts with up to 43 years of follow-up.  The incidence of dementia (identified via death records and physician diagnoses) showed highly statistically significant reduction in dementia incidence with higher caffeinated coffee intake (up to a particular ceiling of intake).

From the abstract: "After adjusting for potential confounders and pooling results across cohorts, higher caffeinated coffee intake was significantly associated with lower dementia risk (141 vs 330 cases per 100 000 person-years comparing the fourth [highest] quartile of consumption with the first [lowest] quartile..."

"The most pronounced associated differences were observed with intake of approximately 2 to 3 cups per day of caffeinated coffee..."

I have personally increased my coffee consumption because of this investigation.
