A worthy challenger in the coffee scale Game of Thrones!
Occasionally you hear about a new product which might upset the existing hierarchy. I have, for the longest time, owned and used what would be considered the industry's best coffee scale. I recently heard about, and purchased, a new coffee scale and wanted to let you know about it.
The BooKoo Themis coffee scale has now taken pride of place on my coffee bench. The first thing you notice about the scale is its excellent build quality. What's also great is that it measures flow rate as espresso is being extracted (I find this a really useful way to understand whether my grind setting is right or not)... and when I turn off the scale it lets me know the status of the battery. The other scale I use doesn't warn me about low battery until it's too late and has, on occasion, turned off mid-espresso shot! The other positive thing about this scale is that it is half the price of the industry leader!
There is only one thing that I don't like about the scale... it's tiny (which may be a benefit for some) and can only fit one cup on it. It's also too small to use with my Hario V60 pour over set up. Having said that, it is absolutely perfectly sized for me to make my own double espresso as well as my wife's quite large flat white. Apparently BooKoo is about to release a larger version.
